Sellers must ensure dangerous goods sent to byrd comply with regulations and submit safety data sheets (SDS) for classification. byrd supports limited fulfilment of certain hazardous items but does not allow air transport for them.
Compliance & responsibilities for sellers
Dangerous goods (also called hazmat) are substances or materials that may pose a risk during storing, handling, or transporting because they contain flammable, pressurised, corrosive, or otherwise harmful substances. To prevent potential health and safety risks, byrd gathers dangerous goods information related to any products fulfilled via byrd.
Dangerous goods that you send to us must comply with all applicable regulations to ensure that they are transported, stored, handled, and labeled safely and correctly. Noncompliance exposes employees, carriers, and customers to potential health and safety risks.
Note: Please be aware that consumer products such as laptops, smartphones, household cleaners, spray paints, and cosmetics might also be regulated as dangerous goods. You can find a list of products that may be regulated as dangerous goods in the below section "Examples of possible dangerous good".
Recognise dangerous goods
Generally, any warning label or phrase on a product package means that it may be regulated as a dangerous good.
If you think your product may be regulated as a dangerous good, ask the manufacturer or supplier. The manufacturer is required to provide a safety data sheet (SDS) for all regulated products. The SDS is then used along the supply chain for safe storage and handling of the products during transport.
Important: Please submit the safety data sheet to byrd and we will review it and classify your product accordingly, as long as the information is complete and accurate.
Dangerous goods that can be fulfilled via byrd
Important: Fulfilment of dangerous goods that require air transport to the recipient country is currently not possible through byrd.
The following dangerous goods can be fulfilled via byrd:
Battery products
Lithium batteries are widely used in consumer goods. However, lithium batteries can also be dangerous. If damaged, dropped, crushed, or short-circuited, they can release dangerous amounts of heat and may ignite. They are also dangerous when exposed to heat. For these reasons, lithium batteries are always subject to specific transportation requirements.
Dangerous goods in limited quantities
Products from these classes can be fulfilled via byrd in limited quantities only. You can find the information on the class and the division of your specific product on its safety data sheet.
Maximum allowable storage limits for dangerous goods in the warehouse
According to the established regulatory framework for every warehouse as well as the warehouse's physical construction, there is a maximum allowable quantity limit for dangerous goods in the warehouse. These limits help to ensure the health and safety of fulfilment center employees and compliance with local regulations. For example, for Germany, the TRGS-510 regulates the maximum allowable storage limits for the various hazard categories.
Dangerous goods are categorised into hazard types, for example, flammable liquids or toxic substances. Each of these hazard types has a defined maximum allowable quantity limit in each warehouse.
Important: Please provide byrd the quantities of dangerous goods you plan to store at the warehouse, so that we can check if we are within the allowed threshold.
